Greetings, CAU Nation!

Spring semester 2019 is here and with it comes the beginning of the next chapter for our beloved Clark Atlanta University. As most of you are aware, I have assumed the duties of the interim presidency per the request of the CAU Board of Trustees and an extensive national search is currently underway to find the University’s next great leader.

As the Presidential Search process unfolds, CAU will continue to operate as usual with a focus on maintaining greater efficiency, continuity and transparency. However, as Interim President, I am also committed to ensuring that this period of transition will not be one of inaction or lost momentum.

This semester, we will begin laying the foundation for improving the “CAU Experience”. This initiative will leverage the University’s historic legacy to create a refreshed and vibrant image to the community. More importantly, the initiative will cultivate unique resources, experiences and opportunities that benefit our students. Clark Atlanta University’s students are at the heart and soul of all that we do; they are our future civic leaders, scientists, artists, advocates, and educators.

The launch of the CAU Experience will ultimately ensure that we provide the enriched environment that our students need to succeed, and the University is already seeing positive changes as a result:
  • New Tradition: In keeping with our mission to “Lift Every Voice”, I am proud to announce the establishment of a new tradition at CAU---The Lift Dinners. Hosted by the Office of the President, the Lift Dinners are a monthly series of social gatherings where select student leaders, faculty, staff, and alumni come together around the table for good food and great conversation. These dinners are like a typical “dinner party” but are focused on exploring new ideas, possibilities and concerns of our key stakeholders. We have already had our first Lift Dinner on January 18th and we will be announcing the dates for future dinners soon. Attendance is by invitation only, so here’s hoping you make the invite list!

  • New Department: CAU’s new office for University Relations, Events, and External/Community Affairs (UREECA), will provide greater brand, marketing and messaging leadership, improve all University communications, and raise the awareness and quality of University-led initiatives and events. UREECA will be instrumental in furthering our mission in the days ahead; and I will be sharing more about this department in the coming weeks. In the meantime, feel free to drop by their office at Harkness Hall, Room 214 and say hello!

  • New Communications: Transparency is key to building and maintaining a solid relationship; to this end, we aim to keep you up to date on official initiatives and changes through this very newsletter, which has been rebranded as The Harkness Memo. This more abridged, monthly newsletter replaces the Presidential Newsletter and is designed to be a quick and easy read via your PC, smart phone or other mobile devices. This memo is my direct connection to you, and I hope you will keep reading and share it with others!

As you can see, we are not resting on our laurels here at the University and there are even more exciting days ahead for CAU---Stay Tuned!
